Stage of the project: Idea or something is already done
Inaron develops innovative electromechanical brake for use in bicycles and e-bikes. The technology enables advanced software features like ABS or Pitch-Over protection. Supplementary mobile application allows for deeper customization than ever, allowing for personalized profiles and usage by people with hand accessibility issues.
Current Status
Technical and Safety Concepts are developed. We are developing digital Proof of Concept and following physical Proof of Concept.
Market
We plan for phased development with enhancing customer reach and product portfolio.
Applicable to all phases is global bicycle market currently valued at 84.25 bln$.
Each phase will be targeting Europe first as home market and soon after expanded to global shipping with high priority on US customers.
Here is the description of each phase and it's estimated global value. Important note, our total reach per phase is sum of all previous phases.
Phase 1 - urban and commuter customers valued at ~18 bln $
Phase 2 - cargo users and last mile delivery for <250 kg vehicles valued at ~4 bln $
Phase 3 - mountain bike and other high performance markets valued at ~14.5 bln $
Phase 4 - expanding portfolio by gear shifting solution opening market by ~ 2 bln $
Phase 5 - expanding for road bike segment, with highest margins and customer expecation, valued at ~5 bln $
Problem or Opportunity
There are few major problems.
Problem 1 - While riding a bicycle, independently of where and how (city, forest trails, racing) there is always a risk of braking too hard with front brake and crashing over the bar (pitch-over). Such crash, combined with moderate speed and little to no protection may lead to hospitalization which, aside of harm, can come expensive.
Problem 2 - Bicycle brakes rely of grip strength to brake effectively. People with hand accessibility issues, low grip strength or small hands may find it difficult to brake effectively
Problem 3 - With latest trend of hydraulic brakes, any change in lever or brake module calls for refilling and bleeding brakes which usually requires trained specialist. Additionally if bicycle needs to be transferred i.e. by plane, the same process has to be applied. Any change of pads or rotor requires setting up brake manually.
Solution (product or service)
Answering problem 1, Inaron brake system allows for software features that prevents Pitch-over type crashes and improve effective brake force with ABS or brake balance.
Answering problem 2, mobile companion application allows to fully customize brake lever for reach, range, resistance, dead zone and brake force progression, independently of the actual braking force.
Answering problem 3, electronic brake modules do not use any hydraulic fluid or steel wire, instead the information is transferred by electronic components. This enables brakes to be plug-and-play, without need of specific drainage or refilling, it only needs to disconnect the cable. After changing components, system will recognize the change and initiate automatic self calibration. Used does not need specialized knowledge.
Competitors
Main competitors are Shimano (Japan) and Sram (USA) as major equipment providers sharing 95% of the western market.
None of them and other created solution such as Inaron and there is no direct alternative.
Advantages or differentiators
Advantages:
Software enabled safety features - ABS, Pitch-Over protection, dynamic brake balance enhance braking safety on road - currently there is no integrated solution on the market, only auxilary ABS module for e-bikes.
Advanced customization options - customizable brake lever and braking force independently - top models have only adjustable reach, Inaron adds range, resistance, dead zone and haptics.
Integrated self-charging option - Inaron will add self-charging solution for users who don't want constant battery replacement or remembering about charging the bicycle - Existing electronic shifting solution have to be charger and have replaced batteries
Live diagnostics - Inaron system will monitor itself so the user know about any issue before it's too late. With existing solution user knows about brake failure only when they want to brake.
Lower maintenance effort - no need to check usage of brake pads or alignment, Inaron system will track it and notify user when service is needed.
Finance
Our Revenue model assumes 3 main channels
1. Hardware sales, primary B2B to bicycle OEM, additionally D2C e-Commerce, estimated 95% of revenue
2. Mobile application premium feature subscription, estimated ~ 3-5% of revenue
3. Telemetry data sale, mainly for local governments for enhancing infrastructure
Cost of unit varies between phases, our current assumption at competetive market price.
We target 40% margin within 4 years and up to 47% within 7 years.
Majority of costs are in variable costs as raw materials for production.
During R&D phases, labor costs are significantly higher due to need for specialized engineers.
We need 6000 units sold annually to cover expenses. Our target is 30 000 units sold annually within 6 years.
Business model
We are manufacturing company, selling equipment to bike builders.
The model can be described as B2B2C.
Additionally we have secondary stream in form of freemium mobile application.
Our key partners will be selling to the user.
Metrics that we will be looking at are: partners relationships, units sold, margin levels, user satisfaction, user trust.
Money will be spent on
R&D - labor and equipment
Production - leverage with acceleration grant
Marketing - local brand building
IP protection - finalizing Poland procedures, filing with PCT
